Lord Mayor’s 5k City Centre Classic – 2 July 2016

Getting away to a fast start was always going to be key in the 21st staging of this showpiece event which took place shortly before the Lord Mayor’s Procession.  Thousands of people lined the streets of Norwich to cheer on the high quality field of runners as they completed two laps of the parade route.

Hoping to put in good performances and avoid the hangman’s noose of the halfway distance cut-off time were Great Yarmouth Road Runners duo Marc Evans and Simon Bekker. This they did achieve but with differing results with Marc running a strong evenly paced race to finish in 72nd place in a time of 18:05. Unfortunately Simon paid the price for going out too quickly at the start and after suffering a lower leg injury in the final kilometre hobbled over the finish line for 140th place in a time of 20:35.

The fastest male and female in the field clocked winning times of 14:46 and 16:06 respectively. In total 145 runners out of the 175 that started the event managed to complete the course, the largest number in the history of the race.
