The Heritage Coast Marathon, Half Marathon and 10k race always takes place in lovely weather…..apart from this year. Unfortunately the forecast was correct with windy conditions and heavy rain. Despite this, seven Great Yarmouth Road Runners headed out to Thorpeness in Suffolk, one to tackle the marathon, five to take on the half marathon and one to compete in the 10k. All the races follow a similar, mostly offroad route, taking in the beautiful Suffolk coast and wooded countryside, with a loop around Minsmere bird reserve.
Matthew Sutton took on the marathon route and did not disappoint coming home in third place with a superb time of 3hr 31min. Not only was this a superb time and position for Matthew, it was also his 50th marathon.
Nicola Baker, Andrew Baker, Karen Manning and Kerstin Langer raced the half marathon and ran together until the shingle section on the beach at mile 3 when conditions of the course caused them to split. Nicola and Andrew Baker came in at 1hr48min45sec and 1hr48min46sec respectively. Karen Manning ran strongly to just scrape under 2 hours with 1hr59min59sec followed by Kerstin Langer with 2hr4min56sec. Ivan Lees finished off the GYRR contingent in the half with 2hr19min9sec.
New club member Joanne Illingsworth completed the tough 10K course in 1hr08min14sec.
