Fourteen Great Yarmouth Road Runners (GYRR) flew around the Mike Groves 10k held at the old RAF base at Coltishall. The event, which is one in a series of three, was superbly hosted by the Coltishall Jaguars Running Club. This race is held annually dedicated to the memory of a local runner, Mike Groves, who was tragically killed in a traffic collision in 1998.

A donation from this race goes to East Anglian Air Ambulance, which is a worthy cause at any time.  However, for one runner it proved to be a lifeline as a competitor from Ryston Runners collapsed at the 4k point.

First on the scene were fellow competitors who quickly summoned the help of the marshals who were able to call for the emergency services.  Three competitors waited for the ambulance to arrive before carrying on their own race to finish in a much slower time.  Thank you to our local heroes Darren Honour, Matthew Morley and Dean Saunders.  In the midst of terrorist atrocities it is reassuring to see the best of the human spirit in action. We all wish our fellow runner a full recovery.

Results of the race almost seem secondary after witnessing the distress of a fallen runner. However, the race went on and GYRR had a successful set of results. In the warm conditions running two laps of the RAF base provided little respite from the elements.

First back for the club was Marc Evans who was thrilled to earn a substantial PB of 37.34.  His triathlon training is clearly paying off.  A warm welcome was offered to new member James Carass who completed in his first race for the club in a PB time of 43.35. Also to Rebecca Sturman who competed in her first ever 10k race.

Bringing home silverware for the club was Penny Studley who was 1st in the ladies 40-44 age group.  She was also part of the winning veteran ladies team with Toni George and Fiona Williams.

It was great to see former member Dave Girling back racing and although he is not currently a member we hope that might change if he relocates back to the area on a permanent basis. Also a special mention should go to Roger Andrews for his current excellent form.  He is in the over 70 age category and remains an inspiration to his club mates for the improvements he is making.
