Sunday 24th March was the date for the second London Landmarks Half Marathon. 5 ladies from the Great Yarmouth Road Runners travelled to the capital to take part in the race which had an impressive 13,000 participants. Fiona Williams, Lisa Smith, Lorrain Dawson (unfortunately unable to run due to injury), Jane Middleton and Kate Wakefield.
The route took the runners through many twists and turns passing a variety of London's most iconic landmarks such as the Tower of London, St. Paul's Cathedral, Big Ben, The Shard and The London Eye to name just a few; Starting at Pall Mall and ending up by Downing Street. The atmosphere was almost carnival like with street entertainment, music stations, cheer stations and the general public who were relentless in supporting and cheering the runners along the whole route.
Lorrain and Lisa were running to raise money for Guide Dogs for the Blind but due to injury Lorrain was unable to take part and guide Lisa around the route so Fiona stepped in to take up the role as guide. Lorrain however was there to support her fellow team mates who are extremely thankful to her for all the encouragement. As runners we all know how difficult and frustrating it is to have to be a spectator in a race you should have been running. We very much appreciate your support Lorrain.
Kate was running to raise money for the British Heart Foundation and raised an incredible amount of £520. Well done Kate!
All four ladies loved the whole experience and all had great runs with Jane’s highlight being the awesome Chelsea Pensioners and the Pearly Kings and Queens at the finish.
Fiona was delighted that she had beaten her previous half marathon PB by 10 minutes, that is with both herself and Lisa managing to clock up an extra half a mile on route! Thanks goes to Lisa for helping her to achieve this, who never ceases to amaze us all.
The ladies brought home some superb finishing times:
Jane Middleton 2:07:37 Kate Wakefield 2:12:57 Fiona Williams 2:14:56 (PB) Lisa Smith 2:14:56
