The Cambridge Half Marathon is an amazing event as it continues to grow in popularity, this year seeing the most Great Yarmouth Road Runners (GYRR) taking part compared to previous years. 19 members of the team made the journey with many making a weekend of it.
Running 13.1 miles is never easy so when the heavens opened and the wind started to gust, just prior to the start, it added to the challenge of the day. However, all the hard training in all weathers paid off for the team who had an incredibly successful day. Whether it was getting a personal best time (PB), racing to gain momentum for the numerous spring marathons, completing the distance for the first time or sheer camaraderie to support a club mate, GYRR saw all it’s members safely home in under two hours and 40 minutes.
First club member home was Sean Jermy, with a PB of 1.18.33. This was particularly impressive as Sean came 56th out of the 6885 runners who completed the race. Almost half of the team earned themselves a PB on this flat and fast course; amongst them Darren Honour finishing in 1.21.26. Club coach, Andrew Baker, hasn’t competed at this distance recently as he has been focussing on the marathon and Ironman events. He got a substantial PB of 1.29.47 which is a reward for leading the club training which seems to paying dividends in terms of current club results.
Husband and wife duo, Jacquie and Myles Duffield ran together. Myles paced Jacquie to a superb PB of 1.53.36. Jacquie was thrilled to knock 6 minutes off her previous best. She even had time to high-five two of our youngest travelling supporters, Darci and Noah Baker, who alongside their mum Claire provided much appreciated support at the 9 mile stage. They were proud to cheer their Dad, Steven Baker, onto his new PB of 1.33.13; bravo!
Lisa Smith and Dave Silk are another formidable duo. Dave does an incredible job of guiding Lisa – who is registered blind – throughout the year at races and in training. Lisa was thrilled with her PB of 2.03.11 which bodes well ahead of her Bungay Marathon in April.
