Brighton Half Marathon 26-2-17
Three ladies from Great Yarmouth Road Runners braved the fog, rain and over 20mph headwinds of Storm Ewan to take part in the Vitality Brighton Half Marathon on 26th February 2017. This course is considered virtually flat to the locals, however Anita Betts, Vicki Brownsell and Adele Godbolt did notice more than a slight incline in places, especially against the headwinds.
Starting near the Brighton Pier on Madeira Drive, the course takes you into Brighton centre, past some beautiful sites such as the Royal Pavilion and the majestic St Peter's Church before turning left up the hill towards Ovingdean. The route then turns around to head back down into Brighton past the Pier and onwards towards Hove. A final change in direction at Hove Lagoon brings you along the seafront, past the colourful beach huts and back to the welcome sight of the finish line on Madeira Drive. The crowd support along the entire route is very uplifting.
Anita Betts was first home for GYRR by smashing 10 minutes off her previous half marathon personal best with a new PB of 2.39:49. Adele Godbolt took 10 minutes off her 2016 Brighton Half time to finish in 2.41:14 (despite being held up at mile 11 for a few minutes to stop and help a fallen runner). Vicki Brownsell took 5 minutes off her previous personal best to get a new PB of 2.45:43 despite dealing with a myriad of health issues on the day.
All in all Brighton Half marathon is a very well organised and fun event despite the best efforts of Storm Ewan to persuade us otherwise.
